Bird Control Needed For Nusiance Birds & Diseases in La Jolla

Posted on by jdroach

La Jolla, a popular community in San Diego, is known for its elegant restaurants & shops and their elaborate homes. For tourists, the recreation is limitless at beach spots like La Jolla Shores, Seal Beach, and Children’s Pool.

Recently, a large volume of nuisance birds, rodents, and harbor seals have contributed to the continuing accumulation of waste and droppings at Children’s Pool and the condemned lifeguard tower. Lifeguards have become extremely ill and claim the area is a hazardous place to work.

Reports of spinal meningitis and respiratory issues have been associated with the heavy fecal matter and disease-infested areas in the coastal La Jolla area. But lifeguard officials claim there is no established connection between the two.

Several lifeguards patrolling Children’s Pool in La Jolla want the city of San Diego to take responsibility and provide a safe, clean working environment. San Diego County Health Officials state that contracting meningitis through airborne exposure or contacting contaminated water is “highly unlikely”. Primarily meningitis is transmitted via exchange of bodily fluids.

However, no one is denying that pigeons, seagulls, rats, and squirrels are a pest problem for La Jolla’s Children Pool. A power washer was used to clear bird feces that were 2 inches deep on the rooftop of the tower. And bird control techniques have been applied including bird spikes and other bird deterrent products. Also, birds and rodents are nesting inside the tower and its restrooms.

San Diego’s First District Councilwoman, Sherri Lightner, has requested the lifeguard tower in La Jolla to be demolished but has yet to be successful.

Getting rid of nuisance birds and thoroughly cleaning up the waste from the aftermath of bird and rodent infestation is necessary to prevent serious health issues. Public areas and restaurants especially need proper bird control & professional clean-up services to ensure food products are not contaminated.
